USPS Certified Mail Tracking Statuses Explained

You sent a Certified letter and USPS just posted a new status on the tracking page. Here's what each one actually means and whether you need to do anything.

Pre-Shipment / Shipping Label Created

What it means: USPS has the tracking number on file but hasn't physically scanned the letter yet.

What to do: Nothing. The first real scan usually happens within 24 hours of drop-off.

Accepted / USPS in possession of item

What it means: A post office or carrier has scanned the piece into the network.

What to do: Nothing — this is the official 'mailed' event and the mailing date on the green receipt.

In Transit to Next Facility

What it means: The letter is moving between USPS processing centers.

What to do: Wait. Certified First-Class typically delivers in 2–5 business days.

Arrived at USPS Regional Facility

What it means: Reached a sort center on the way to the destination city.

What to do: Nothing. Expect another scan within 24–48 hours.

Arrival at Unit

What it means: The letter is at the local post office that services the recipient's address. Out for delivery is next.

What to do: If it doesn't move within 2 business days, call the destination post office with the tracking number.

Out for Delivery

What it means: A carrier has it on the truck for delivery today.

What to do: Wait for the delivery scan or a Notice Left.

Notice Left (No Authorized Recipient Available)

What it means: Nobody was available to sign, so USPS left PS Form 3849 for the recipient to pick it up or schedule redelivery.

What to do: The recipient has 15 days to claim it. After that it's returned to sender.

Unclaimed / Return to Sender

What it means: The recipient never picked up the letter within the hold period.

What to do: It will be returned to the sender address on the envelope. Consider resending or trying a different address.

Delivery Attempted — No Access to Delivery Location

What it means: A gate, building lock, or other obstacle blocked delivery.

What to do: Recipient can schedule redelivery or pick up at the local post office.

Delivered

What it means: USPS handed the letter to the recipient (or an authorized agent) and captured a signature.

What to do: Nothing. The signature is stored electronically and available for years — save the tracking number.
